Having a Pet in Your Rig

Who doesn’t love a pet? They make us smile, keep us company, and, in some cases, keep us safe. Just because your home away from home is the cab of a rig, doesn’t mean you can’t have a pet. Lots of drivers have them, and if the experience of those with pets in their rigs means anything, there are lots ways to have fun with a pet on the road.

Man’s Best Friend

Dogs seem to be the most common pets for truckers, even though cats are the most numerous pets in the U.S. (Fish outnumber them all, almost 2 to 1 on dogs. Not the best pet for a rig, though). Dogs provide companionship and even security for their truck driving owners. Dogs can be so enthusiastic about anything, and that joy can’t help but rub off.

But before you rush out and get a puppy, there are a few things to consider (we’re all about responsible pet ownership). You’ll need to be sure to plan extra time for bathroom breaks and walks for Fido. He doesn’t like holding it too long, and you won’t like it when he doesn’t. And something you might not think of: the water at most fuel islands isn’t potable, or drinkable. No big deal, everybody carries bottled water these days; but again, you’ll need to do a little extra planning.

The Cat’s Meow

If you’re not a dog person, a cat is a good option. Everyone knows cats are much lower maintenance than dogs. Cats are so relaxing, because they tend to be laid back (well, most of them). And cats give you the benefits of having some company without being up in your business 24/7.

Again, there’s a few things to think about if you want a kitty riding shotgun. Litter box considerations are chief among these. The best suggestion we’ve seen is industrial strength velcro to hold the litter box in place. (One quick slam of the brakes will make a believer of anyone.) And, again, there’s the water deal.

All Creatures Great and Small

But dogs and cats are by no means the only possibilities for in-cab critters. Birds, with their wings clipped and cages properly secured, make great road buddies. Some will even talk to you! Some drivers have even been know to keep lizards in their rigs, (again, securing the tank is key) and we’ve even heard a story about a tiger showing up at a service plaza in Pennsylvania. Can’t confirm that one, though.
