ExpressIFTA Special Edition: TruckerTuesday & National Transportation Week

Are you ready for a special edition, ExpressIFTA TruckerTuesday & National Transportation Week blog? I am a big fan of interesting facts, and the trucking industry has some of the most amazing facts I have ever read. So without further ado, I present a Factual Representation of Trucking Nation:

  • The powerful truck engines that haul a loaded 40 ton truck are designed to go 1,000,000 miles before an overhaul or complete rebuild. Semi engines are designed for the rough life, and can actually run nonstop. The only time they need to be shut down is to change the oil and service the engine, or to follow anti-idle laws.
  • Since 2003, truck engines have been overhauled for cleaner emissions. They have dropped 88% in sulfur dioxide emissions, a 48% decrease in nitrogen oxide emissions and a 32% drop in particulate matter. You know Mother Nature is grateful. If she had a voice, she would definitely be thanking a trucker.
  • In the US last year trucks moved, get ready for this, 69.1% of all domestic freight tonnage, up from 68.5% in 2012. Internationally, trucks haul the majority of all NAFTA trade, moving 55.4% of all trade with our neighbors to the North (Canada) and 65.4% of all trade with Mexico.
  • A Mack Truck in Australia holds the longest road train record, hauling not 1, not 2, but 112 semi-trailers. Seriously, a Mack Truck pulled one-hundred and twelve trailers 328ft to capture the record for longest road train. With every trailer connected the road train measured 4,836 ft 11 inches long (inches count too).
  • On average, long haul drivers operating vehicles weighing over 33,000 LBS are logging over 100,000 miles a year. That’s equal to driving around the world 4 times.
  • Trucking Moves America and there are approximately 2,000,000 registered tractor trailers in the US alone, carrying in excess of 9 Billion Tons of cargo per year. Basically nearly 70% of all freight tonnage moved in the US goes on trucks.

Trucking actually does move America. Without truck drivers, the economy would come to a standstill. So for all your hard work, Thank You Truckers! The transportation industry is unlike any other and truly amazing to see in action.
