When preparing your IFTA return with ExpressIFTA.com it is good to know the difference between taxable & non-taxable miles. Here is a quick guide to help you know what is what and make your IFTA filing easier.
What are non-taxable miles? In all jurisdictions fuel, trip permit miles are not taxable miles. When filling out your IFTA return, you will include fuel permit miles in the total miles section on the return. You don’t need to include the miles in the taxable miles for the jurisdiction that issued the permit.
What about toll miles? Toll miles are considered taxable miles. You will include them on your IFTA return.
What about exempt miles? Exempt miles are used to calculate the mpg, but are not used in calculating the taxable gallons. When filling out your IFTA return, you will see the total miles and the total taxable miles which will include the calculation of the exempted miles.
