How To File Your Quarterly IFTA Return

The most common error on an IFTA Quarterly Tax Return is mistakes in math calculations. If you’re like me, you will need to double and triple check your math or you may choose to use a program, like ExpressIFTA, that does the calculating for you, so you do not have to worry about miscalculations costing you money.

Many states will mail the Quarterly Returns and current tax rates out to the taxpayer, 30 days before the due date, but in efforts to “go green” fewer states are doing so and instead offering the option to E-File your IFTA Quarterly Tax Return.

Check with your state on what the options are to file your quarterly return.  Keep in mind, that even if you do not receive your Quarterly Tax Return in the mail, you are still required to file your return. A return must be filed every quarter, even if the licensee does not operate or purchase fuel in any IFTA jurisdiction in any particular quarter.

The due date for the quarterly tax return is the last day of the quarter for which the return is being filed. If the due date falls on a weekend or State holiday, the due date is the next business day.
