How The ELD Mandate Makes IFTA Easier

Alright trucking nation. We’re here to discuss two things today, ELDs and IFTA. This is because despite the major resistance facing ELD devices the ELD mandate went into effect in December 2017.

You might be thinking that’s last year’s news, but with the 4th quarter IFTA deadline coming up on January 31 we can actually look at a new ELD benefit, as we explain how the ELD mandate makes IFTA easier.

How The ELD Mandate Makes IFTA Easier

The FMSCA initiated the ELD mandate as a way to hopefully create a safer work environment for truckers, as trucking is the most dangerous industry in the world. Under this rule, all drivers must have an electronic recording device installed to automatically track their hours of service (HOS).

One benefit of having your HOS automatically recorded is that you will have less paperwork to fill out yourself. You will no longer have to manually record your own HOS. This helps with IFTA reporting too, because your miles per jurisdiction will automatically be recorded.

By having your information automatically recorded human errors and basic mistakes will be reduced. For example, common mathematical errors and milage gaps will be eliminated, and miles traveled between nonadjacent states will be a thing of the past.

Because mistakes will be reduced your chances of receiving an IFTA audit will be much lower. However, if you are audited, your ELD device will have your IFTA data on hand to be instantly accessed. This will make the IFTA auditing process go by much faster and easier.

Not all ELDs are created equal, but some record more data than others. For example, some ELDs record your trips beginning and ending locations, the total distance traveled, and the distance traveled per jurisdiction.

ExpressIFTA Now Accepts ELD Data

Plus, your marketing leading online IFTA reporting solution just got an upgrade, because we now accept ELD data. This is just one of the ways we make IFTA reporting easier.

All you have to do is export your ELD data and send it to Support@ExpressIFTA.com. Then we will convert your file to a supported IFTA reporting format and upload all of your information to your account with our bulk upload feature.

Then all of your information will be conveniently stored online for you to access at any time. At the end of the quarter, all of your IFTA calculations will be automatically totaled up in an easy to read IFTA report that can be printed, downloaded, emailed, and used to instantly complete your IFTA return.

It’s the quickest and most convenient way to simplify IFTA fuel tax reporting so you can spend more time focusing on what really matters, like getting the most out of your 11 hour drive time. Instead of spending hours on your IFTA return, let us handle all of the complicated work for you.
