Will The ELD Mandate Effect IFTA?

Despite efforts to delay or completely scrap the ELD mandate altogether, it remains intact. That means major changes are coming to the trucking industry as truckers all across the nation will have to comply with the mandate.

As these major changes go into effect you may wonder how big of an effect the ELD mandate will actually have on the trucking industry. Also, you may wonder how it will affect IFTA. While we can’t say how much the trucking industry will change with ELDs, we do know it will simplify IFTA reporting.

How The ELD Mandate Will Simplify IFTA

Fist all, the ELD mandate was published by the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) and requires all drivers to use an Electronic Logging Device (ELD) to record their hours of service. The device will plug directly into the truck’s engine to record these hours. Also, drivers have until December 18, 2017, to comply with the mandate.

The benefits of the ELD mandate for IFTA reporting include less paperwork. Instead of using a paper log the ELD in your vehicle will automatically record the distance traveled per jurisdiction. This will save you time by eliminating the need to manually record your information.

By automatically recording your mileage, inconsistencies will be reduced. Simple mistakes like reporting that you traveled between two nonadjacent states will be eliminated. Also, mathematical errors and mileage gaps will be reduced.

When basic human errors are eliminated then the risk of being audited is also lowered. Plus, if you are audited the entire process will go much more quickly and smoothly because your information will be stored on your device to be easily accessed. You can also check to see if your system saves your information for four years, which is required in the event of an IFTA audit.

Depending on your type of ELD your IFTA reporting per trip could become a lot easier. Some have the ability to record the trip’s beginning and ending locations, as well as the total trip distance, and distance traveled per jurisdiction. Also, make sure that they will inform you if they go down so you can switch back to manually recording your data.
