The Complete Guide That Will Make Filing Form 2290 Online Easy

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s take a moment to review the basics of the heavy highway use tax. So who is required to file the 2290 tax? If you are an Owner-Operator with a registered vehicle with gross weight more than 55,000 Ibs, then Form 2290 filing applies to you.

When is The Form 2290 Due Date?

Well, the official IRS 2290 filing period for the 2018 Form 2290 opened on July 1, 2018, for the 2018-19 tax year. The typical taxable period of Form 2290 filing begins on July 1 and ends the following year on June 30. If your current truck was in use at the beginning of the tax period your Form 2290 due date is August 31, 2018.

If your first use month for your current vehicles is any month other than July you will need to file Form 2290 by the last day of the month following your vehicle’s first used month.

ExpressTruckTax Form 2290 Instructions

Step 1:

Create a free ExpressTruckTax account using your email address.

Step 2:

Click the orange ‘Start New Return’ button and enter your trucking business information (Name, Address, and EIN). Please note that you must have an Employer Identification Number (EIN) for your business to complete the Form 2290 filing process. You cannot use your Social Security Number; if you do use your SSN, your IRS Form 2290 will be rejected.

Step 3:

Enter the 2018-19 tax year and your vehicle’s first used month. If your current vehicle was in use last July, this will be your first used month. ExpressTruckTax Form 2290 filing is based on your vehicles first used month, and it is due the last day of the month following when it was first used.

Step 4:

Enter your rigs information including its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and taxable gross weight. You will need to specify if your vehicle is exclusively used for agricultural or logging purposes. This is extremely important because you could receive a significant 2290 tax credit or exempt the road tax 2290 altogether. However, no matter your vehicle type you will still need to file and receive your stamped Schedule 1.

Step 5:

ExpressTruckTax automatically calculates your tax amount based on your information provided. You can then select one of the following HVUT payment options: Pay 2290 with credit card, debit, direct debit, electronic funds withdrawal (EFTPS IRS), check, or money order.

Step 6:

ExpressTruckTax will review your information to ensure error-free filing; however, we highly encourage you to double-check your VIN number as this is the most common reason for HVUT rejection.

Step 7:

Transmit your 2290 tax directly to the IRS. You will receive your proof of HVUT payment in a matter of minutes, and you will be set until 2019.
