IFTA For Beginners

IFTA is the International Fuel Tax Agreement between the 48 continental United States and 10 Canadian Provinces. It was put in place to simplify the reporting of fuel usage by qualifying motor vehicles that travel between two or more jurisdictions (states).

You are required to file this return four times a year with your base jurisdiction, which is the state where your vehicle is registered. By complying with this law you will receive an IFTA license and two decals to place on the driver’s side door of your truck.

This will allow you to travel between multiple jurisdictions. Also, the fuel taxes collected are redistributed among the jurisdictions. The IFTA deadlines are:

1st Quarter – April 30th
2nd Quarter – July 31
3rd Quarter – October 31st
4th Quarter – January 31

To complete your IFTA return you will need to report your fuel and distance records for the quarter, including your:

Total miles traveled by the IFTA licensee’s qualifies motor vehicles per jurisdiction. including taxable and nontaxable, IFTA and non-IFTA, and trip permit miles.

  • Total gallons of fuel used by the IFTA qualifying vehicle per jurisdiction.
  • Total miles traveled per jurisdiction.
  • Total gallons of fuel consumed per jurisdiction.
  • Tax-paid gallons of fuel purchased per jurisdiction.
  • And the current tax rate per jurisdiction.
