Filing a Zero IFTA Return for the 3rd Quarter

Welcome back, Trucking Nation! We’re officially past the halfway point of October, which means the 31st is fast approaching. That means….. getting your IFTA return filed on time. (You were thinking of something a little more scary?) As you know, October 31st is the 3rd quarter deadline for getting your IFTA return in. But what if you didn’t run during the 3rd quarter? Do you still need to file a return? In a word, yes. Let’s look at the details.

What IFTA Means To You

IFTA means if you drive in two states or more, you must have an IFTA license and decals on your truck from your base jurisdiction. If you do have an IFTA license, you are required to file a quarterly IFTA return, whether you logged any miles or not during that particular quarter.

How Do I File a Zero Return?

So how do you file your IFTA return in the case of not having driven for a certain quarter? It’s really quite simple, and only takes a few minutes to complete. Filing an IFTA return for a quarter in which you didn’t drive is called filing a zero return. When using ExpressIFTA, all that means is you enter a “0” in the field for mileage. That’s all there is to it! There’s no need to enter any other information if you already have an ExpressIFTA account. If you need to sign up for a new account, click here for instructions on how to sign up.

Time is Running Out

Now is the time to file your IFTA return for the 3rd quarter. But as the deadline gets even closer, filing a paper IFTA return becomes more and more unrealistic, (because of time constraints) and your best choice is to file with ExpressIFTA.

You can also use our premier full-service provider Truck Services of North America not only to file your IFTA return, but to file registration and permits, calculate all truck-related taxes, even start a new trucking business.
