How To Improve Your Trucking Time Management

With the ongoing driver shortage, the trucking industry is facing the potential chaos that could occur as more and more drivers quit. It’s no secret that company drivers have an extremely high turnover rate. Plus, the ELD mandate that goes into effect December 18th could cause even more drivers to quit.

By improving time management skills and learning how to communicate with dispatchers both company drivers and owner-operators can increase their profit per mile and working conditions.

Effective Time Management For Truckers

One issue that truckers face with their hours is having too many unpaid hours. Generally, truckers are paid per mile, not by the hour. This means the hours spent waiting in traffic jams and for loads to be loaded and unloaded are unpaid.

This method encourages OTR drivers to drive as much as they can to increase their profits. Through methods of driving tired, forging paper logs, and more. Sometimes if they do stop to rest dispatchers may pressure them to drive more to increase production.

However, because truckers are only allowed to legally drive 11 hours a day these actions to increase production can be stopped. The ELD mandate will help enforce these hours and stop dispatchers from pushing drivers beyond their limits.

One of the ways to better manage your time is to plan your routes accordingly to find parking earlier in the day. You don’t want to be caught at the end of the day circling lots that have no space left.

If you park early you can get up early and beat the traffic. However, sometimes your parking solution can be as easy as learning what places along your route always have parking available and what places are always crowded.

You can also check out parking apps like TruckerPath where other drivers share information about how much parking is available around them so you will know if a spot is waiting for you or not.

You will want to avoid traffic, meaning don’t be on interstates and highways during rush hour traffic in the early morning and afternoon. Take back roads to bypass all of the commuters. You can also drive at night to avoid traffic congestion.

Also, you can call your shipper and try to move uploading and unloading times to see if they can take care of your freight sooner. This may help you to cut down on the number of hours you have to wait. Keep in mind that you will never want to be late, that could cause you to wait around for an extra day before your truck is unloaded.

It’s also smart to plan ahead for your routes. Try to schedule the most efficient stops and look at your routes on Google Maps. This will help you avoid going through city areas with a lot of traffic.

You can also use Google Maps to look at your destination to learn where the entry gate is and the loading docks. This way you won’t circle the facility three times and waste time trying to figure it out.

Improve Your Hours

With a little planning and experience, you will be able to learn how to efficiently manage your time and reduce unpaid hours. Even though trucking does involve extra hard work and time it’s an extremely rewarding career with freedoms that no other industries provide.

Please share your trucking time management advice in the comment section below and visit for more trucking blogs.

How Truckers Cook Thanksgiving Meals In Their Rigs

Happy Thanksgiving truckers! Can you believe that turkey time is here already? Some of you can, because you have probably been delivering loads and loads of turkeys so families all across the nations can enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

We also know that with crazy black Friday shipping demands that you’re probably busy driving during this holiday. We hope that you get the chance soon to go home and spend time with your families to celebrate and share what you’re thankful for. Also, and to of course eat tons of turkey. If you want to cook your own meal to enjoy in your rig it might actually be easier than you think.

Cooking Your Own Trucking Thanksgiving Dinner

First of all, we need a moment to thank the crockpot for making cooking tons of delicious meals OTR possible. Thank you for giving truckers the opportunity to become in rig chefs and for providing excellent meal options aside from tons of fast food.

That being said, you can cook your turkey exactly the way you want it in your crockpot! As you drive your turkey will be slowing heating to perfection. Simply place your turkey in the crockpot with enough water to cover a 3rd of it. You can use chicken broth instead of water if you would prefer.

Then add any spices, butter, and glaze that you would like and set the crockpot on low heat. In about five hours you will have one heck of a deliciously juicy turkey. We just recommend packing some snack while it’s cooking because the delicious turkey aroma will fill your rig.

You can also easily make banana pudding in your rig for a classic Thanksgiving dessert. All you need is pudding mix, water, vanilla wafers, and bananas. Follow the simple instructions and let the pudding chill in your mini-fridge until you’re ready to eat it.

For a nice sweet potato side dish get some microwaveable potatoes and head them up for about 5 minutes. Then you can add butter, cinnamon, and even mini marshmallows to them to make an OTR sweet potato casserole.

Another incredibly easy Thanksgiving side to make is cranberry sauce. Just open the can in your rig and enjoy. If there are veggies you can’t live without simply use a hot plate to heat them up.

Also, fruit salad can easily be mixed up in a large bowl. Apples, oranges, bananas, grapes, and multi-colored marshmallows with mayonnaise makes for a savory-sweet and tangy fruit salad that you won't be able to get enough of.

Happy Thanksgiving

The ExpressIFTA team thanks you for all your hard work delivering goods across the US to make Thanksgiving possible. If you’re driving over the holiday remember that cooking your favorite recipes in your rig is easier than you think and actually can be cheaper than truckstop turkey dinners.

However, we hope to get the chance to go home to your favorite Thanksgiving recipes soon! Please tell us your favorite Thanksgiving traditions in the comment section below.

What Happens If You Don't Get An ELD

Despite the efforts to delay or completely get rid of the ELD mandate, it’s here to stay. As the compliance date ticks closer on December 18th we may see a new wave of heavy protesting to try and stop it, but you still need to prepare your trucks.

If you fail to comply with the ELD mandate you will have hefty fees and penalties to face. You could even be placed out of service! It will be much cheaper and easier, in the long run, to go ahead and purchase and install your ELD device. Check out the penalties you will face if you don’t comply with the ELD mandate.

Penalties For Failing To Comply With The ELD Mandate

Now you won’t instantly be shut down the moment the clock strikes 12:00 December 18th if you don’t have an ELD device. You will have a bit of a grace period implemented by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA).

The CVSA has created the out-of-service-criteria (OOSC) for the ELD mandate and has provided truckers with a little time to comply. However, this isn’t a free pass because beginning on December 18th inspectors and roadside personnel will begin checking and inspecting vehicles for compliant ELDs.

Then depending on the jurisdiction’s discretion if you don’t have a compliant ELD you may be issued a citation. The citation amount is also up the to jurisdiction's discretion and they could be quite substantial. Then on April 1, 2018 the OOSC associated with the ELD mandate will go into effect.
So, if you’re having trouble finding ELD hardware as fleets scramble to meet the compliance date, don’t worry. You have until the spring to comply before getting shut down. Although, it's really best to go ahead and comply to avoid citations.

Also, it’s important to remember that if your grandfathered automatic onboard recording device (AOBRD) that meets the requirements of 49 C.F.R. 395.15 then you can continue using it until December 16, 2019.

In the past when CVSA member jurisdictions implemented new mandates and regulations they noted that a phase-in approach was the best method of implementation. That’s why the CVSA Board of Directors, FMCSA, and motor carrier industry agreed to the phase-in approach with the ELD implementation.

Hopefully, this will simplify the transition to using ELD devices for commercial vehicle operators.

Are You Ready For The ELD Mandate?

The ELD mandate is about a little less than a month away! We hope you’re ready to comply in order to avoid extensive citations and eventually getting parked. Don’t let the holiday season distract you, make sure to get the hardware that you need installed before December 18th!

Please share your thoughts on how the ELD mandate will affect the trucking industry in the comment section below and visit ExpressIFTA for more trucking blogs.

Will The ELD Mandate Effect IFTA?

Despite efforts to delay or completely scrap the ELD mandate altogether, it remains intact. That means major changes are coming to the trucking industry as truckers all across the nation will have to comply with the mandate.

As these major changes go into effect you may wonder how big of an effect the ELD mandate will actually have on the trucking industry. Also, you may wonder how it will affect IFTA. While we can’t say how much the trucking industry will change with ELDs, we do know it will simplify IFTA reporting.

How The ELD Mandate Will Simplify IFTA

Fist all, the ELD mandate was published by the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) and requires all drivers to use an Electronic Logging Device (ELD) to record their hours of service. The device will plug directly into the truck’s engine to record these hours. Also, drivers have until December 18, 2017, to comply with the mandate.

The benefits of the ELD mandate for IFTA reporting include less paperwork. Instead of using a paper log the ELD in your vehicle will automatically record the distance traveled per jurisdiction. This will save you time by eliminating the need to manually record your information.

By automatically recording your mileage, inconsistencies will be reduced. Simple mistakes like reporting that you traveled between two nonadjacent states will be eliminated. Also, mathematical errors and mileage gaps will be reduced.

When basic human errors are eliminated then the risk of being audited is also lowered. Plus, if you are audited the entire process will go much more quickly and smoothly because your information will be stored on your device to be easily accessed. You can also check to see if your system saves your information for four years, which is required in the event of an IFTA audit.

Depending on your type of ELD your IFTA reporting per trip could become a lot easier. Some have the ability to record the trip's beginning and ending locations, as well as the total trip distance, and distance traveled per jurisdiction. Also, make sure that they will inform you if they go down so you can switch back to manually recording your data.

ExpressIFTA Simplifies IFTA Too

Remember that before and after the ELD mandate goes into effect, that ExpressIFTA is here for you as the market-leading online IFTA reporting program. Not only will all of your information be saved online in one convenient location for your business records, but we will automatically calculate all of your IFTA calculations with 100% accuracy.

Plus, you can record your information the way you want to. For example, you can record detailed trip sheets, record your information on a monthly basis, or even upload all of your information at once with the bulk upload feature. You can also import your mileage records directly from your GPS.

Also, it’s finally time to stop having to keep up with tons of receipts in your truck or back at the office. Every time you purchase fuel simply take a photo of your receipt and upload it directly to your account to store for your records.

Help, I Cant Afford My IFTA Tax

If you missed the IFTA deadline then you will have IFTA penalties to face. There’s no way around it, especially since the deadline was last week. Plus, the longer you wait to file, the larger the penalties will grow.

ExpressIFTA can help you quickly and easily generate your IFTA report so you can immediately complete your return, but what happens if you need help paying the amount of fuel tax you owe? Luckily we have a few solutions.

What To Do If You Can’t Afford Your IFTA Tax

IFTA Penalties

We will start by going over the IFTA penalties. If you fail to file by the deadline you will face a penalty of $50 or 10% of the taxes you owe depending on which amount is higher. Your base jurisdiction also reserves the right to add a monthly interest charge to this amount. In Nevada, you will be charged 10% of the amount you owe plus the $50 fee.

If you make a late IFTA payment or don’t pay the amount you owe in full you will face a monthly fee of .4167% of the total amount you owe until it’s paid in full. Plus, in Nevada, you will face a series of administrative fees such as $100 the first time, $500 the second, $1,000 the third, and more.

In addition to these penalties, your base jurisdiction reserves the right to suspend or revoke your IFTA license. Then you will really find yourself in trouble without the ability to legally travel between jurisdictions.
However, this usually isn’t the case for first-time offenders. Your base jurisdiction will take a look at your case and your background before they decide to take further actions.

What To Do

If you can’t afford the amount of IFTA tax you owe then it’s best to use a credit card to fully pay the amount you owe then pay off your debt on a monthly basis. If you don’t fully pay the amount of fuel tax you owe interest will accrue and you may get your license revoked.

Instead of using a credit card you could take out a small loan to cover the amount you owe. Look at interest rates and minimum monthly payments to determine your best option.

If you don’t have good credit and can’t get a loan then still turn in your return by the deadline and pay whatever you can to lower the amount you owe. Then pay off the amount in increments as fast as you can. It may also benefit to contact your jurisdiction to explain your situation.

Contact Support

You can use ExpressIFTA’s innovative features to report all of your IFTA totals online. All your totals will be automatically calculated with 100% accuracy and placed in an IFTA report. You can email the report, print it, and even use it to instantly complete your return! If you need any IFTA assistance give the outstanding, US-based, ExpressIFTA support team.
