Tips for Truckers with Insomnia
When people ask you what your sleep schedule looks like in your line of work - what do you say?

Joining the trucking industry comes with a lot of sacrifices, including your sleep.

Now sure, truckers do get the opportunity to sleep... it’s not like you’re driving the entire time. However, the biggest reason truckers suffer from sleep problems is due to the lack of a normal, regulated bedtime.

After delivering a load at 10 a.m. and running out of driveable hours for the day, it gets pretty difficult to convince yourself to fall asleep.

Sleep isn’t one of those things you can just will upon yourself. And many truckers deal with large amounts of insomnia quite often.

But you don’t need to worry for long, we’ve got some tips to help you beat the insomniac nights once and for all.

Take a Break Before Your Break

Experts always say to give yourself a little break before heading off to bed - usually about an hour.

It’s because your mind (and body) do not operate on an light-switch mechanism. You need to give yourself time to decompress and relax before you can drift off to sleep uninterrupted.

It’s known that 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep is actually much better for you than 8 hours of interrupted. I mean, yeah, seems obvious.

So before crawling into the back of your cab, take a few minutes, go on a walk, and listen to music. It will help ready you for a good sleep.

Make it Cold

I can’t be the only one who enjoys sleeping when it’s cold out. And I’m not wrong in doing it.

Whenever you sleep in a cooler environment you’ll actually enjoy a longer and deeper sleep.

Bump the temperature down so that it’s between 60 and 68 degrees. Trust me, it will help put you right at ease for a long night sleep.

Think Before You Drink

Sure alcohol might calm the nerves, but will it really help you sleep?

Answer is, alcohol will put you to sleep but it won’t help you stay asleep - or have a restful night’s rest for that matter.

So put down the alcohol and try cherry juice instead. Cherry juice is naturally high in melatonin, the hormone in your skull that helps you fall asleep.

We get it - as a trucker it’s hard to get a good night’s sleep on a regular time schedule. But that doesn’t mean you have to live with insomniac night. Try this tips instead and see if they help you fall asleep and stay asleep all night long.
