What's the Deal With Illinois IFTA?

What do you know about the International Fuel Tax Agreement? If you’re a seasoned trucker, you probably have this down. But for the newer members of Trucking Nation, we’re going to touch up on the basics before the next quarter rolls around.

First up, ExpressIFTA has made e-filing your IFTA return super easy! But we know you may have some questions, so we’re here to clear those up. We’ll even clear up the confusion with Illinois IFTA filers, too!

What Are the IFTA Basics?

If you’re a new trucker, you might know what IFTA is. For those who don’t, it’s the International Fuel Tax Agreement, and it allows you to travel in participating member jurisdictions without having to keep multiple licenses. This is one of the few times the government did something right, if you ask me!

You receive your IFTA license through your base jurisdiction, which gets you decals for your truck. These decals keep you on the road, but your license needs to be renewed annually in December.

Most importantly, your IFTA license requires you to file a quarterly return that calculates how much fuel tax you either owe or need to be credited back.

How Do I File IFTA in Illinois?

Of course, some base jurisdictions do things differently—these things vary from state to state. For example, truckers with Illinois base jurisdictions need to file using the MyTax Illinois system.

They’ll walk you through the details, so head over to the Illinois Revenue site to find out more!

How Does ExpressIFTA Make Filing Easier?

If you’ve been tracking your mileage properly, then e-filing your IFTA return is going to be easy. Just head over to ExpressIFTA and create a free account.

You won’t have to worry about knowing the tax amount for each state; ExpressIFTA does all that for you in the background.

Once you have your account running, enter in your business and truck information, select your base jurisdiction (that’s your home state), and then enter your miles and fuel purchases! I told you it was easy.

Can I Start My IFTA Now?

Alright, you want to get a head start on your IFTA filing? Well, before the next quarter rolls around go ahead and download the IFTA Fuel Tax Calculator App. Then again, if you want to go further then check out TruckLogics—transportation professional software designed with the feedback of our filers.

3 Questions to Improve Your Time Management

With all the time you spend on the road, we know you’d like life to be a bit easier. Whether you’re a greenhorn or a trucking master, there’s a lot to learn for time management and transportation.

How can you manage your time better while on the road? Start by asking yourself these questions.

How Can I Rule the Road?

Planning your route is smart, but we don’t mean just finding the fastest way to your destination. By route planning, we mean taking a logistical approach to where you are going, what time you'll get there, and at what time you’ll be headed through potential trouble areas. Basically, if you know you’ll be traveling through Atlanta during rush hour traffic, you can change your route before you ever get near the ATL. You’ll save tons of time and gain more opportunities by avoiding rush hour traffic jams!

Want to save some more time on deliveries? Get loaded early! If you get to your appointments early and get loaded or unloaded ahead of schedule, you’ll build up a strong momentum that can carry you through your route ahead of time. Just make sure you don’t push yourself into the danger zone—you still need to sleep when you get tired. After you deliver your loads early, you have enough time to get to a rest stop before the evening rush. Don’t get stuck looking for a parking spot!

How Can I Get More Time for Taxes?

Speaking of time management, are you ready for your tax deadlines? Whether you’re running behind or you want to find the most deductions you can, ExpressExtension is the way to go. With their safe and secure website, you can get instant approval and up to 6 months of automatic extension in just a few moments.

And hey, March 15th is the deadline for business tax extension Form 7004! E-file IRS Form 7004 to receive an automatic 5 or 6 month tax extension. All you need to do is gather key information, like your business name, address and Tax-ID/EIN. Make sure your information matches what the IRS has on record! We’re still a few months away, but personal tax extension Form 4868 is due on April 18, 2016. This will extend your filing deadline to October 17, 2016.

How Does Extra Tax Time Help Me?

You don’t want to be hit with any late filing penalties. The late filing penalty is generally 5% of the unpaid taxes for each month or part of month it is late, up to 25% of your unpaid tax. If the return is more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is $135 or 100% of the unpaid tax, whichever is smaller.

We know the 1st Quarter IFTA deadline is still a good amount of time away, but it’s never too early to start planning your return! In fact, consider a professional management system like TruckLogics for better time management and record management.

With great time management, you’ll discover a whole new level of productivity in your work! If you have any questions, give our dedicated, live customer support team a call at 704.234.6005.

Oh, did you hear we’re headed to the Mid-America Trucking Show at the end of the month? Come find us at Booth 66121! Sign up for your FREE tickets here!

1st Quarter IFTA Tips: Taxable & Non-Taxable Miles

Whoa, is it March already? How’d that happen? Not only is March the month of basketball Mid-America Trucking Show, it is also the end of IFTA’s 1st Quarter.
tournaments, Saint Patrick’s Day, and the

So as IFTA’s 1st Quarter dwindles down, we figure we could run you some of the hints, tips, and tricks that make IFTA filing a bit easier. Buckle up, Trucking Nation, and let’s head down the IFTA filing highway.

Get a Head Start on IFTA Filing

Why wait until April 30th, the IFTA deadline, to start getting your miles in order? If you spend a few minutes every day working on your trip sheets, you won’t have to rip your hair out come deadline day. Also, try keeping your previous IFTA records in a safe, easy to access place within your base jurisdiction so that you don’t need to worry in case you are on the receiving end of an IFTA audit firing squad.

What are non-taxable IFTA miles?

First of all, fuel trip permit miles are not taxable miles. When you fill out your IFTA return, you need to include fuel permit miles in the total miles section on the return. You don't need to include the miles in the taxable miles for the jurisdiction that issued the permit.

So where does that leave us with toll roads? Haven’t I already paid for those? Well, no. Toll miles are taxable, since toll fees are not fuel taxes. The fees are exchanged for access to that road, but you most likely have other road options available to you. So it looks like you’re stuck with those miles.

So What Are Exempt Miles?

Exempt miles are used to calculate your miles per gallon (MPG), but are not used in calculating the taxable gallons. When filling out your IFTA return, you will see the total miles and the total taxable miles which will include the calculation of the exempted miles.

The Advantage of Trucking Apps

Want to calculate your IFTA tax before the filing deadline? Download our IFTA Tax Calculator App free from the App Store or Google Play store, and you won’t head into the deadline blindsided. Maybe you want a bit more automation for IFTA? Check out TruckLogics, the premier cloud-based trucking management software for transportation professionals.

Overall, you still have time before you need to file your IFTA return. So stay organized, go in with a plan, and don’t be afraid to get help! If you do need help, call us at 704.234.6005 and our dedicated customer support team will answer your filing questions!

Can Time off Improve Trucker Performance?

Being on the road takes a toll on a driver, we all know that. With lower back pain, weight gains, and a lack of sleep, OTR life is anything but easy. If you ask us, we think drivers could use some more time off.

Now, Trucking Nation, we know stores and businesses across the nation would shut down if you didn’t do your job. But you know it more than anyone—sometimes you need to step away from the cab and get some well-deserved time off.

We know it’s not always up to you. Heck, it’s up to the company you’re working for most of the time, unless you’re an owner-operator. But finding some down time will recharge you for the road, and studies suggest it can lead to a more productive year.

So make sure you get your time off—and fleet owners, try approving some of those time off requests for your drivers. Why?

Why Time off?

First off, research shows that appropriate time off for drivers leads to a better performance. How? Well, recent studies show that each time off request that is approved shows an increase in the bonus rate increasing nearly 3% the following month. On top of that, these studies showed that each time off request approved resulted in drivers traveling 218 more miles the following month than drivers who did not take time off. Overall, the increase in time off could result in an increase of revenue of more than 5%.

How to Spend Your Free Time

So how can you spend this extra time off? First off, the obvious choice: spend your time off with your family! Whether you’re spending time with a parent, a spouse, or a child, your family will appreciate the time you have together. And maybe, just maybe, you can take your time off and go on a fun vacation! Regardless, you have plenty of options during time off, vacations, and weekends home to feel rested and ready for the road.

Meet Us at Mid-America Trucking Show!

Hey, if you want to be productive during your down time, come find us at the Mid-America Trucking Show. We’ll be at the MATS from March 31st through April 2nd at booth 66121. So come on by and say hey! Want to join us at the show? Claim your free tickets now! At the show, we’ll be offering an assortment of prizes.
