Last Minute IFTA Filing Tips

Well, Trucking Nation, it’s almost here. The last day to file your IFTA return for the 3rd quarter without incurring any penalties is October 31st. Hopefully you haven’t put off filing until the last minute, but if you did, ExpressIFTA has got you covered. If you’ve filed with us before, all you need to do is log in to your account, follow the few simple steps, and you’re done. If you’re already an ExpressTruckTax account holder, just log in to that account, and click on IFTA. All your information will already be populated for you. It’s that easy!

New User Sign Up

If you’ve never filed with us before, signing up is quick and painless, as is filing. Just click on the link or go to expressifta.com and click on the “New User” button in the top right corner. Fill out your information and you’re ready to begin your IFTA report.

Information Needed

To generate your IFTA report, you’ll need two pieces of information: your mileage log and your fuel receipts. Let’s look at both of these.

Mileage Log— You can use trip sheets, quick entries, or GPS upload to enter your mileage for the quarter. However you choose to input this data, ExpressIFTA will do all calculations for you.

Fuel Records— These are usually your fuel receipts. A program such as TruckLogics can help you to keep track of your receipts and allow you to upload them into ExpressIFTA.

Once you have this information entered, ExpressIFTA does all the heavy lifting for you. All necessary calculations are taken care of. You just have to either print the IFTA report and mail it in to your base jurisdiction, or e-file the report with your specific state. That’s it!

We’re Here for You

Don’t worry if you’re having trouble with your IFTA return. Our world-class support team is based here in Rock Hill, S.C., ready to answer all your questions. IFTA Late Fees & Penalties

Hello, Trucking Nation! The 3rd quarter IFTA filing deadline of October 31st is fast approaching. If you haven’t filed your IFTA return yet, there’s still time. But what happens if you miss the deadline? Does the Taxman come knocking on your door? Well, it’s not quite that bad, but there are several consequences to either filing a late IFTA return or not filing one at all. Let’s look at what can happen.

IFTA Late Filing Penalty

The first thing that will happen is you’ll be assessed a late filing penalty. This is applied whether you owe taxes or not for the filing period. This penalty is $50 or 10% of the tax that you owe, whichever is greater. If you don’t owe any tax for the filing period, the penalty will be $50.

As we’ve already stated, the deadline for the 3rd quarter filing period is October 31st. Since that falls on a Saturday this year, you won’t have to have your return in until Monday November 2nd. Your return must be postmarked by midnight that night to be considered on time.

Late Tax Payment Penalty

If you owe taxes and don’t pay those on time, you will be assessed a late tax payment penalty. The penalty is calculated as .4167% of the tax owed to each jurisdiction you drove in for the filing period. This is figured per month starting on the day the return is due.

If you think those penalties sound harsh, some states actually revoke your IFTA license if your return is not filed on time! This usually only happens in cases where multiple returns have not been filed, but technically your IFTA license may be revoked for being late just once. And you won’t be eligible to renew your IFTA license until those taxes are paid in full.

As you can see, it’s important to file your IFTA return on time. So don’t forget to file. And since the deadline is so close, your best bet is to e-file with ExpressIFTA.com. Your calculations and filing can be done in minutes and you’ll be back on the road where you need to be.

What Do I Need to File My IFTA Return?

If you haven’t yet filed your IFTA return for the 3rd quarter of this year, you may be wondering what information you need to file your return. Don’t worry, it’s very simple. ExpressIFTA does all the hard work for you. All you need to do is enter a few pieces of data, and you’ll be ready to file your return in minutes. Let’s have a look at what exactly is needed to complete your IFTA return.

Mileage Log

The first thing you need is your mileage log for the 3rd quarter. That’s July, August, and September. You can either enter the mileage manually, or if you’ve been storing your mileage in an Excel spreadsheet, you can simply upload the information into ExpressIFTA. It’s that easy! You can also use TruckLogics to manage your trucking business.Whether you’re an owner-operator, or manage a whole fleet, TruckLogics is loaded with tools that will make running your trucking business much easier for you.

Fuel Receipts

The only other thing you need is your fuel receipts for the quarter. You can easily import your receipts if you use a fuel card, since you should have digital copies of all your receipts already. If you’ve been entering this information into Trip Sheets all along, you’ll be all set to generate your IFTA return. Otherwise, you’ll need to enter your fuel information manually using Quick Entries. Your base jurisdiction may require copies of your receipts, so make sure those have the date, the fuel type, gallons or liters purchased, and the name and address of the seller on them.

Once you’ve entered your fuel records, your return will be ready to be generated. That’s all there is to it! There’s no need to calculate totals or look up tax rates since ExpressIFTA does all that for you.

Contact Us

If you have any questions or just need help filling out your return, our world-class U.S.-based support team is available to take your phone calls Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Just call 704.234.6005, or you can chat with us on our website during the same hours. Filing a Zero IFTA Return for the 3rd Quarter

Welcome back, Trucking Nation! We’re officially past the halfway point of October, which means the 31st is fast approaching. That means….. getting your IFTA return filed on time. (You were thinking of something a little more scary?) As you know, October 31st is the 3rd quarter deadline for getting your IFTA return in. But what if you didn’t run during the 3rd quarter? Do you still need to file a return? In a word, yes. Let’s look at the details.

What IFTA Means To You

IFTA means if you drive in two states or more, you must have an IFTA license and decals on your truck from your base jurisdiction. If you do have an IFTA license, you are required to file a quarterly IFTA return, whether you logged any miles or not during that particular quarter.

How Do I File a Zero Return?

So how do you file your IFTA return in the case of not having driven for a certain quarter? It’s really quite simple, and only takes a few minutes to complete. Filing an IFTA return for a quarter in which you didn’t drive is called filing a zero return. When using ExpressIFTA, all that means is you enter a “0” in the field for mileage. That’s all there is to it! There’s no need to enter any other information if you already have an ExpressIFTA account. If you need to sign up for a new account, click here for instructions on how to sign up.

Time is Running Out

Now is the time to file your IFTA return for the 3rd quarter. But as the deadline gets even closer, filing a paper IFTA return becomes more and more unrealistic, (because of time constraints) and your best choice is to file with ExpressIFTA.

You can also use our premier full-service provider Truck Services of North America not only to file your IFTA return, but to file registration and permits, calculate all truck-related taxes, even start a new trucking business.

Contact Us

As always, you can contact our world-class ExpressIFTA support team based in Rock Hill, SC at 704.234.6005. We’re available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, and by email at support@expressifta.com.
